Radiohead / Remix / Reckoner
Radiohead is doing another remix contest at http://www.radioheadremix.com – this time for Reckoner which is one of my favorite songs on the album. Check out the entries, vote for your favorites… I like the Iskra String Quartet version
Here’s the original:
I’m aware very few people read this blog and the ones I know who do don’t care about Radiohead but whatever - deal with it. The next post will probably be about Battestar Galactica or knitting.
Postcards from My Momma
My sister posted this to “Postcards from Yo Momma“
ayuda, por favor
Can you tell me how to say “wobbly bookcase” and “dust” (v.) in Spanish?
Gracias,
Mom

Lebowski Fest will be in San Francisco on Sept 5 & 6. I miss it every year! I’ll have to content myself with endlessly quoting lines and watching the Wii version of one of the best dialog scenes in the movie.
I’m Fracking Magical
If you are one of the 4 people who reads this blog, you know I love Battlestar Galactica. While I could go on a rant, similar to my Bowie post, on all the reasons you should watch it, instead I present you with an amazing flickr site of ceramic animals done like cylons. My favorite, for obvious reasons, is the unicorn:

N.B.: These are the “classic” style cylon centurions – newer models are hotter and get naked a lot. Oh and there’s a t-shirt:

For the uninformed, “frack” is how BSG gets away with the cast swearing like sailors.
fractalicious
This is one of those random bits of happiness the internet sends my way: lightning in slow motion.
Utterly fascinating, beautiful, and strangely organic.

Knitting in 8-bit
Somehow the two just go together. A woman is knitting the entire first level of Super Mario Bros as a scarf:

I definitely do not knit enough geeky things. I’ve been meaning to knit the Space Invader socks from Knitty.com
for ages:

Oh and Jundt, I haven’t forgotten about your Houndstooth scarf. (Where’s my kitchen island?)
House of Legos
Someone has combined two of my great loves – LEGO and Radiohead into this awesome interpretation of the camera-free House of Cards video:
(via Brothers Brick)
It looks like there are quite a few Radiohead/LEGO mashups (I’m not alone!). This Street Spirit one I’ve seen before:

Da mihi basia mille (or oscilloscopes)
From RetroThing
I’ll bet you thought that there was nothing at all funny about oscilloscopes. Found in the February 1961 issue of “Joker – The Satire Magazine!”.
He’s right: I thought there was nothing at all funny about oscilloscopes… or Latin derivative jokes.
Now it’s only funny in the ironic “There’s no way this would be printed because too few Americans have a large enough vocabulary to get the joke” way. That’s not to say that in 1961 that many people knew what “osculate” meant. I do but I’m a Latin nerd. Now I would say that almost as few Americans know what an oscilloscope is. Some humor is not timeless.
House of Cards
Radiohead is once again doing crazy awesome things to traditional music mediums. After being cut free from their label, they are doing the unthinkable for a successful band – making their music free and accessible to fans. The freedom they have applied to In Rainbows in general is fantastic: allowing fans to choose the album price, the Nude remix contest. With few exceptions, the record industry has not embraced or even really recognized the sea change brought on by digital media – not only music “piracy” but also the proliferation of fan remixes. Radiohead, Beck, NiN and a few others are catching on – and I’m glad to see it.
Now Radiohead made a music video for House of Cards using 3D imaging technology (no cameras or lighting) and provided the visualization data for users to play with and make their own music videos.
Here is the original video:
Check out the youtube group for fan-made videos.
Oh and here’s the data plus a “making-of” video.
If you haven’t read it already, you should also check out this interview in Wired of Thom Yorke by David Byrne (Talking Heads interview Radiohead – hee!). I also found Byrne’s accompanying opinion piece on the future of the recording industry really interesting.
